Creative Ways to Manage Burnout

Working in the nonprofit world is rewarding – but it can be really challenging, too. Being under resourced certainly plays a role, but the emotional nature of our work can be equally as difficult.

Although the typical advice – set work-life boundaries, add movement to your day, and make sure you are getting enough sleep – are important, sometimes those things are just not enough.

Consider trying these creative ideas to help keep you energized and excited about the important, purpose-filled work you do.

Bring play into your day.

Every day, we are working hard to solve some of society’s most challenging problems, and it is so easy to get caught up in the seriousness of it all.

Use your breaks to do something fun that brings you joy – and involves more than just scrolling on your phone. It could be as simple as challenging your coworker to a game on a mini basketball hoop in your office, setting up a puzzle in the staff breakroom, or keeping a giant Jenga set near your outdoor picnic table.

It doesn’t need to be complex, but I can guarantee that adding in some fun will help lower your stress and put you back at your desk ready and energized to tackle the next project.

Engage with the people your mission serves.

Have you been stuck at your desk writing appeals, thank you letters, and grant proposals? Consider taking a day to interact with the people who benefit from your organization. Sit in on a client meeting, join one of your teammates for a house visit, or spend the day restocking your food pantry shelves and connect with the clients who use it.

Not only will this provide a much-needed break and change of scenery, but it will also help reinvigorate your excitement and serve as an important reminder for why you care about your mission. Plus, this will give you the ability to share real-life experiences in an authentic and passionate way with your donors, volunteers and prospects.

Host a monthly mini retreat.

Gather your team for a monthly meeting focused solely on brainstorming. Use the time to talk about creative new ideas for innovation and growth. Make it a priority to set goals. I know we are all SO busy but it is critical that we dedicate time to the future of our organizations. Your team will leave feeling inspired, connected, and excited about future opportunities.

Consider a digital-detox hour.

Let’s be honest, whether it’s our computer, phone, or even a conference room zoom meeting, we all spend A LOT of time working in front of a screen. Consider hosting a screen-free afternoon once a month for you and your team. Use the time to gather feedback, share client success stories, or even have a staff meeting outside – no emails allowed!

Create a relaxation room.

Take an empty office or meeting room and transform it into a relaxation den for you and your staff. Fill the space with things that you think your team will enjoy – weighted blankets, coloring books, a yoga mat, relaxing music, positive mantras, a comfy chair or even chocolate! A peaceful and quiet space meant only for resting (not working) might make a big difference in helping you all recharge.

Burn out is real! And even if you are practicing the best kind of self-care remedies, it can still happen. Be kind to yourself and don’t forget the reason why you chose to do this important work in the first place. Try some of these tips to help you embrace play, connect with your mission, and engage with your team for innovation.
